Follow our blog for regular updates. We love happy customers and we’d love to keep you up to date on the latest trends.

CHAPTER ONE – WHERE TO START

Here it is – the place where you start to look for new custom made hardwood furniture. Remember, solid wood furniture is in a class of its own. Plus, it often takes weeks, wandering through the retail outlets selling imported stuff at a huge cost, while the quality is average.

And it’s off the rack, everyone has the same stuff. Definitely not the same as custom built furniture. Surely, the best option is to have what you want to be made at a comparative price, but with quality that you trust.

Not forgetting, of course, that local is lekker. So, instead of physically visiting furniture shops, check out ideas for the exact piece online. Rather visit Pinterest or other such sites, do a search for custom made or solid wood furniture and you’ll find gazillions of ideas that you can expand on.

Or simply draw your own plan and submit it for a quote. Our local artisanal craftsmen, with expert supervision and quality control, will give you exactly what you want.

And that’s a one-of-a-kind piece of custom built furniture that is the envy of all of your friends. At a price that is affordable. Moreover, with advice that is invaluable. Importantly, with every order, our reputation is everything.

So, we ensure that you get exactly what you want, a piece of hardwood furniture that is the right fit. The height, width – general size specifications – along with the ‘look’ that you are trying to achieve, is always spot-on.

HARDWOOD FURNITURE – PERSONALISE YOURS

Firstly, you need to choose your wood. Secondly, it must suit your pocket. Remember, you cannot buy imbuia on a pine budget. So, let’s take a look at the wood types that are available in South Africa.

RUBBERWOOD

Rubberwood is an eco-friendly, pine coloured, light-coloured tropical hardwood grown in rubber plantations. It belongs to the maple family. Interestingly, once the tree stops producing sap (rubber) it is chopped down and a new tree is planted.

It is the most popular wood in our factory as it can be stained to suit the colour required with great results, at a better price than mahogany, for instance. We have made a huge amount of different types of rubberwood solid wood furniture, from kitchen islands to dining room tables.

It has a very distinct grain, working well with Rubio Monocoat – click there for more info on this lovely product. Rubberwood is not really suitable for outdoor use unless it is protected undercover. But it is perfect for indoors. With little shrinkage, it is a stable material for doors or furniture.

And, as it doesn’t warp or bend, it is a good product to replace pine at a good price point. It is also flexible and strong, with resistance to bacteria, mould and fungus. It strongly resembles Scandinavian light wood, so is excellent for modern designs.

KIAAT. AKA AFRICAN TEAK

This wood is chock-full of character with its distinctive white flashes. And you have a choice between lots of white, a little white or all brown. Locally sourced, this African wood is typically found in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Namibia and Angola.

It is resistant to termite and borer beetle, it has a pleasant spicy aroma and is durable. And it scrubs up good! Just a bit of polish results in a lovely shine. So, this popular hardwood is ideal for top quality solid wood furniture with its mid-brown colour. It is a tad expensive but it is really worth it for the unique grain and colours in the wood.

MAHOGANY

This popular African hardwood is found in many different species and grades and varies in price and quality. It finishes well and is great for carving and is often used in making Victorian and Empire reproductions as it has a reminiscent antique appearance. One of the more popular indigenous hardwoods, it is perennially popular for custom built furniture.

OAK

Arguably, this wood is the most popular and widely used hardwood worldwide. And it has more than 60 species.

White oak is the most expensive, red oak has a better price point. It is light coloured with prominent rings, giving it a coarse texture. Extremely durable, oak solid wood furniture often lasts for centuries. Sought-after in the UK, English country designs are a popular style worldwide.

Rustic oak, which is white with lots of natural cracks, fits the latest craze in rustic, distressed hardwood furniture. Heavy, turned legs are crafted from solid pieces of wood known as cants. Contemporary and traditional pieces are in demand for an industrial look, combining oak and steel.

ASH

A light-coloured hardwood, with a straight, regular grain, ash has a medium to course texture and is extremely durable. In the US it is usually used as a utility wood, especially good for tool handles. It is easy to work with, and sands to a fine finish.

OREGON PINE AND SOUTH AFRICAN PINE

South African pine is much lighter in colour than Oregon. However, the warping tendencies tend to cause unhappiness, so we choose not to use it.

Oregon pine, a yellowish colour wood, is full of rustic character. It is a hardwood but is lightweight with a straight grain. The distinctive knots in Oregon Pine add character, perfect for country hardwood furniture. It can be whitewashed, stained, painted or oiled to get the desired finish. Plus, it is a reasonably priced wood. The heartwood varies from red-brown to salmon coloured, while the sapwood is a creamy white to yellow. It is ideal for the following uses.

  • Parquet and wooden floors
  • Load-bearing structures
  • Exterior joinery
  • Stairs &Balustrades
  • Roof overhangs
  • Furniture & Benches
  • Ceilings
  • Steps & Ladders
  • Barrels

pricing

We appreciate that your budget is of utmost importance. And – bonus, we cut out the middleman!

Remember, the retailer pays a high rental to be in a shopping mall, which obviously gets passed onto the price of the products.

We advise the end-user as best we can, and that is a free service.

Now, custom made, solid wood furniture is accessible to everyone. And it’s a price point that is affordable.

With creative manufacturing expertise.

And delivery in Gauteng and Limpopo.

WHAT PIECE OF SOLID WOOD FURNITURE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Obviously, you know what you want, but there are many different styles that fall under the title of custom built furniture.

Firstly, we’ll take a look at tables. Round tables are excellent for smaller dining rooms, with little clutter and minimalist designs, creating an intimate and cosy atmosphere.

Placed close to a window, ensuring good light, is the best setting for this table shape. A nice feature is to have a good pendant light fitting over the centre of the table.

Secondly, oval tables are very much on-trend. They are ideal for patios or large areas and they definitely make a statement.

And importantly, similar to round tables, they encourage conversation as most guests are able to see each other.

Thirdly, a square table needs a lot of space. Plus, they have a tendency to make small spaces feel even smaller.

Ideally and aesthetically they look lovely with a rectangular rug underneath.

DECOR PIECES

Lastly, rectangular tables create a more spacious atmosphere. They appear to elongate the space, somehow making it appear larger.

And, the shape draws the eye along the table, so it is nice to have a décor element present that the table draws the attention to.

These tables are elegant and play nicely with fully upholstered chairs and table runners. See more table ideas at https://woodfurn.co.za/custom-made-dining-room-sets/

In conclusion, take into account the shape of the open-concept space or the room and consider the styling or décor of the area.

That’s it for this week. Hopefully, we have helped you somewhat in your search for custom hardwood furniture.

Of course, there is more to follow – so watch this space.

All the best, Ellie
